24 September 2020 | Talking is Good for You! | Jessie Heng

Talking is in fact an important part of all our relationships – between couples, at work, with the family… It strengthen our ties with other people helping us to stay in good mental state. And being listened to, helps tremendously in making us feel that other people care about us and what we have to say.

Talking about our thoughts and feelings can help us to deal with times when we feel troubled about something. If we continue to turn a worry over and over in our minds, these worry will start to layered on top of one another and grow to become a bigger problem. Although we sometimes find it a relief to talk about our problems to a friend or family member, but most often they cannot help us and we need to talk to a professional counsellor or therapist instead.

Talking therapies involve talking to someone who is trained to help you work out where your negative feelings and ideas come from and why they are there. A counsellor or a therapist can help anyone who is experiencing emotional distress.

What kinds of Talk Therapies are there?

There are a confusing mix of names and talk therapies available, but don’t let the jargon put you off! As behind every of these technical term is a framework of working with people that is designed to help. Therapies are usually divided into several broad types, even therapists who offer the same kind of therapy will have a slightly different way of working from each other, because all therapists have their very own personal style and how they integrate modalities into their interventions as well. Some therapists train in more than one kind of therapy, so it is very common that they may decide to combine a few approaches if that will help you to achieve the best outcomes.

They use talking therapy to give people the chance to explore their thoughts and feelings, identify the effect they have on their behaviour and mood. They can help to describe what is going on in your head and how that makes you feel can help you notice any patterns which may be helpful to a desirable change. Understanding all this during a therapy session can help you make positive changes by thinking or acting differently, and eventually take greater control of your life and improve your confidence.

If the above resonates some part of your life right now, do consider to schedule a session with our counsellors & Start Talking out your mind now to improve your mental health.
